Cinque Terre (Five lands)
A place in which land and sea merge to form a spectacoular and evocative area. Eighteen kilometers of rocky coastline full of bays, beaches and deep waters, dominated by a chain of mountains that run parallel to the coast. Terraced vineyards and olive trees, which containment is provided by ancient stone walls.
A natural heritage of great variety. Walking paths and trails with breathtaking views. Five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore overlooking the sea. An environment in which the secular work of generations has transformed an inaccessible territory in a landscape of extraordinary beauty. A Marine Protected Area and a National Park that protect the absolute uniqueness. These, in brief, the Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

WALKING BETWEEN SKY AND SEA
Much of the success of the Cinque Terre is due to a dense network of path which cover, as a spiderweb, the sea side of the mountain chain side. For centuries the paths have been the only way of connection not only among the five villages, but even with the main city and the hinterland; these paths are now one of the best ways to understand and appreciate the Cinque Terre.

The three main paths, all easy to utilize with a minimum of training and suitable clothing, are well marked by the CAI section of La Spezia with a white-red marker. The first path is the number 1, which runs along the ridge that separates the coast from the Val di Vara. The second is the path that connects the Shrines, halfway up, the places of worship of their respective villages. The third is the path number 2, better known as the Blue Trail, which joins together the five villages.
